The growing season started well with moderate temperatures from the beginning of spring leading into the start of summer. With the summer being warm and dry, autumn saw warmer days and cooler nights, which were warmer and wetter than 2018. While this is not great for many grapes, a combination of the Similkameen mistral flow and our vineyards’ extremely rocky soil composition kept the grapes dry through an unseasonably cool October until picking was complete. All of this resulted in smaller crop sizes and slow ripening that allowed the fruit to fully mature, with balanced acidity and exciting flavour development in this vintage. Total heat units for 2019 recorded at Vanessa were 1,687 Growing Degree Days, a little lower than the previous year. However, the cooler 2019 growing season gives this vintage unique characters and exceptional quality. Harvested on September 19th, 2019.
Terroir and Microclimate
Located high on a hillside overlooking the Similkameen Valley, Vanessa Vineyard’s grapes are cultivated on 75 acres of sloping, well-drained, rocky terrain. The vines grow in rows of rocks, absorbing the day heat and imparting that warmth during the cooler nights. Planted in a west to southwest exposure, the rocky vineyard basks in the afternoon sun. Ideally situated, the vineyard benefits from a long growing season, with low yields of intensely ripe fruit. The unique stony site produces fruit with complex flavours and minerality that are truly distinctive.
The Rosé harvest is one of the most exciting times at Vanessa Vineyard, as it is the beginning of our Harvest and the team is eager to pick. Our goal this year was to produce a lighter, more delicate colour than in 2018, so we were attentive to have minimal extraction from the skins. Whole cluster pressed, chilled and fermented slowly in stainless steel tanks with a proprietary yeast selection, this Rosé has been made at cool temperatures to fully enhance the fruit. Delicate colour, aromas and flavours reminiscent of Southern France embody the 2019 Vintage.
Our 100% estate grown blend of 66% Syrah and 34% Merlot, was picked in early October leading to a complex, dry Rosé that is a very pale salmon colour. A wonderful lingering nose of candied raspberry and strawberry is followed by apple, peach and dried sage notes. The palate shows hints of fresh berry, with grapefruit, tangerine and dried rosemary enhancing the clean, crisp mineral long finish. Only 175 cases produced.
